The University of Hawaii has purchased access to over 300 UH Press titles online in full-text through NetLibrary. Included is a large collection of publicly accessible eBooks, containing many classic works of literature and history.
Accessing netLibrary's eBook Collection
Kapi'olani Community College library users must create a netLibrary user account from a computer on the KCC campus. Once you have an account, netLibrary can be accessed from any computer in the world. Accounts are free to all UH students, faculty, and staff.
To create an account, visit netLibrary.com If you want to browse the Collection and try out some of the features, you won't need to create an account but you must be on-campus to do so. Accounts are easy to establish:
- Follow the link Create an Account on the right side of the screen.
- Create a username, password, and enter your email address.
- Click on the "submit" button.
Once you have created an account, access the Collection directly at http://www.netlibrary.com from any computer in the world.
Finding eBooks
The Collection may be searched by author, title, subject, keyword, or publisher. Keyword searches are the most comprehensive, since they look for words you enter anywhere they occur in the title, author, Library of Congress subject heading, or publisher fields.
Enter one or more keywords to begin your search. Enclose phrases like "small business" with quotes. netLibrary enables you to search for words or phrases in the full-text of ebooks!
Browsing an eBook
You may browse an eBook without logging in. Browsing is the equivalent of taking a book off the shelf and looking through it. While you are actively using it, no other user can access it. If 15 minutes elapses without active use (flipping pages), the book is put back on the shelf, enabling another user to access it.
Checking out an eBook
You must login to check out an ebook.
Must I be connected to the Internet to access netLibrary's titles?
Yes. To view, browse, and check out your library's eBook collection, you must begin online. After you have created an eBook account, you may elect to download an eBook for offline viewing using the free netLibrary eBook Reader Software.
What are the minimum system requirements for the netLibrary eBook Reader software?
- Pentium 100 or equivalent processor
- 32 MB of RAM
- 20 MB of free hard disk space
- Windows 95/98, NT 4.0 or greater
Note: The Reader is not compatible with Macintosh, WebTV, or any version of Unix. However, some Macintosh users have reported success using a third-party software emulator such as Connectix Virtual PC to run the netLibrary eBook Reader application on a Macintosh.
How long can titles be checked out?
The check out feature gives you exclusive use of the eBook for three days. Only one person can check out an eBook at a time. UH System Libraries may adjust this loan period in the future as we gain a better understanding of user needs and interests.
What happens when the loan period expires?
The eBook will be automatically checked back in and made available to other users. You can also return the book before the due date by simply choosing that option.
Can I print an eBook?
You can print single pages of an eBook, much like you can print a single page of a print book on a photocopy machine. Sections of pages, within limitations, can also be copied and pasted into reports and presentations. An entire ebook cannot be printed.
